Celebrating nursing at Livability Treetops

Mandy Nixon, registered nurse and acting manager at Livability Treetops, tells us about the difference that good nursing care makes to people’s lives and futures.

Livability’s portfolio of services includes highly specialised, residential nursing care as well as caring for people with spinal and brain injury, and high-dependency needs.

Tell us about Livability Treetops

We’re a 21-bed high dependency care home with nursing, in a leafy suburb of Colchester. I’m a qualified nurse and have been here for 17 years. Many staff are long-serving here.

Who do you support at Treetops?

People here live with a variety of conditions, including multiple sclerosis, ‘locked in’ syndrome, cerebral palsy, brain and spinal injury. There’s 24/7 nursing care plus our support workers are highly trained with specialist skills.

Are there many services like this in the East of England?

No, there aren’t many at all that offer what we do. We have a huge range of specialist equipment, including a physiotherapy room with a weekly visit from a physio, who briefs our staff on individuals’ treatment for the week; we offer a sensory room; a bathroom with a therapeutic  bath and sensory lighting, sleep systems and more. But as well as that, we want Treetops to be homely and caring – people who visit often compliment us on the way the home ‘feels’. We have great support too from local community services such as a dietician, speech and language therapy and peg nurse. We have good relationships with day services and residents attend a variety of day centres and local church.

Looking at the bottom line, does your level of care save NHS money?

Definitely, because keeping someone in an ‘acute bed’ in hospital is very expensive. We have so much experience with very complex needs, we’re skilled at getting someone stable and avoiding recurring hospital admissions.

You’ve been at Treetops a long time – what’s the best thing about working there?

The people, without a doubt. I’ve learned so much from them. It’s a privilege for me, to be able to make life better for people who live here.
