A brother’s skydive singlehandly raises thousands for Icanho
Last month Gavin Dale took a leap out of a plane at 13,000 feet to raise money for Icanho rehabilitation centre and raised over £3,500. We spoke to Gavin to find out what his motivations were to skydive for Icanho and how the experience went.
How did you become involved with Livability?
Two years ago my brother suffered serious head and brain injuries. He was in a coma and spent a couple of weeks in a specialist unit at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge.
Following his release from hospital he received some great care and support from a local charity Icanho, who specialise in providing rehabilitation services for adults with brain injuries or strokes.
Why did you decide to fundraise for Icanho?
When I decided that I was going to do the skydive, I asked my brother who he would like me to raise money for and he suggested I support Livability.
They provided some fantastic care & support to my brother and his family during a very difficult time and helped them get back on their feet. It’s nice to be able to show some gratitude for this support and hopefully assist them in helping others in a similar position.
What was it like on the day of the skydive?
I was really excited and not as nervous as I thought I would be. Luckily I had a good weather on the day which definitely added to the thrill of the skydive.
The highlight was definitely the jump from the plane & the free fall for around 1 minute, reaching speeds of around 120mph! I decided to have the skydive filmed & photographed so can relive the experience when I want.
You successfully raised £3,000 for Icanho. How does that make feel?
I’m delighted with the amount raised. I’ve been amazed by the level of generosity of friends, family and work colleagues.
My employer LV= is currently arranging for a further £500 to be donated so that will bring the total to over £3,500.
